Haegue Yang Holiday for Tomorrow

Korea has a vibrant and sophisticated contemporary art scene that is still relatively unknown. Haegue Yang's work is marked by a particular preoccupation with the coexistence of formalism and emotion, determination and meandering. Haegue Yang's Holiday for Tomorrow considers our perception of time and the emotional anticipation of holidays - those socially-agreed days in which labour is suspended and we attempt to rest our bodies and minds. At its centre is a video essay showing Seoul during the Korean harvest holiday Chuseok over which a female voice reflects upon the postponement of desire and the dysfunctional hopes triggered by enforced leisure.

For Yang's installation, industrial fans placed within the gallery generate wind at various intervals, altering both the stability of the blinds as suspended barriers and the movement of visitors through the space. Scent atomisers integrated in and around the system of blinds infuse the installation with a subtle olfactory experience, calling upon the visitors subjectivity as a key element in the definition of the space. Flooded with natural light, sculptures made of PVC, evoke shadows of places and experiences not physically present.
